Cable.
In an effort to save some money Brent and I decided that we should get rid of cable and just go to the basic channels. I was thrilled with this idea. At the first of December I warned the kids that we would be getting rid of cable. They no longer would be able to watch all their favorite channels, not even the discovery channel. After hearing that, Jaren just about flipped out. The kids wanted to know what it was that they were going to be able to watch. I listed the channels, 2,4,5,7,11 and sometimes 13. Isabel, being a very literal person immediately changed the channel to 11 to see what was on. Little House on the prairie happily greeted her. She exclaimed, "I Love this show." Quietly off to the side Annika remarked, " Great, now we have to watch 80's shows!!!" FUNNY!!!!
Just recently Brent was lamenting the fact that we no longer have a DVR. Hence, we couldn't head to the basement after the kids were in bed to watch our favorite recorded shows. Brent is very busy with Basketball and Boy Scouts and thus misses a lot of T.V. I understand his concern, and I too miss our nightly traditions. But more important then this, I do not miss my children vegging in front of the tele. I don't miss the Disney Channel, or Nickelodeon, or Cartoon Network. I've noticed that my children are more engaging and play more with each other. They are reading more, more creative, and playing more outside. I do not want that to change.
Since our switch to basic cable I have to be more of a peacemaker and referee. I also have a lot more messes to clean up. But in the scheme of things, I would rather clean up the small visible messes, then the large unseen ones.

Dear Amberlyn, I had made that decision a LONG time ago. I just put a stop on TV cable. I saw that was not only an addiction, but also a way to have my kids not pay attention in what is important. They can't understand my reasons, but ALL we hear in the channels here are ALL the crimes that happened every day. I thought that we see and hear about enough crimes as it is. If we'll go to downtown Baltimore or D.C. we will find ourselves in a worst situation than a horror movie. So, if I can keep the spirit of the Lord in my house...I will do whatever is needed. And the addiction the kids have to TV is just outrageous. Now they still hate the fact, but stop complaining. I think you are a trooper , cause it's a lot harder to explain your reasons to little children, but you have such a great way to look at life that nothing surprise me anymore when it comes from you. My hat goes out to you.
I'm proud of you sticking to your guns!
Plus- I sat through an English movie today so it's always possible that Brent might learn to love those too!

No, no BBC for me anymore.
Which reminds me, that is one of those stations that I need to check out online. Maybe they'll have episodes I can watch online.
I love Hamlet. I watched it a ton when I was a Fresh in College.
Sometime you'll have to check out Much Ado About Nothing. That is my all time fav. Shakespeare play.
We did that years ago when Char & Cara were younger and we were able to spend lots of quality time ready the Book of Mormon and other quality books. It was great!! You will love it. Check out my new blog melsonwheels.blog....Love

I would need to have the whole family go on MTV and do a FamilyCable Detox. We could make it a reality show.

Oh by the way, Almost every LDS family here does not own a TV. It is interesting to see how strong and amazing they are.
So is looking at skinny people, though.

Caroline -- There are no plans in my future to have any more children. I know, I know, none of you believe me. But it's true. How could I have another baby after sweet baby Grace? She is the perfect ending.
I don't think I'd be able to watch your reality shoe either. Although it could be one of those guilty pleasures like Real Housewives of Orange County. Ahhh, how I do miss that indulgence.
Congratulations!! Ben and I did that about a year and a half ago in order to cut costs and I have been loving it. I find that my kids really enjoy a few shows on PBS and I really enjoy having more family time and more time spent with Ben not in front of the T.V. Way to go!!
